Help Healthcare Students Gain Hands-On Learning Experience

The comprehensive education in Adelphi’s College of Nursing and Public Health is grounded in practice, delivery, innovation and efficiency. We serve the community at large, and are dedicated to providing students with the skills, knowledge and specialized training to succeed as leaders in the field.

The Clinical Education and Simulation Lab (CESiL) lab is more important than ever when it comes to training health care workers. Students in our labs obtain vital hands-on clinical experience. Located in the Nexus Building, the 22-bed CESiL houses seven clinical exam rooms, a pediatric exam room, a delivery room and a home-care setting. Students learn in a safe environment, where mistakes can be made without endangering patients, and train in situations ranging from routine to emergency.

Adelphi University’s state-of-the-art Simulation Lab provides in-person experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate nursing students. We use real-life scenarios to augment our theory/clinical courses in fundamental, medical-surgical, pediatrics, obstetrics, and community nursing. We also teach important concepts such as the social determinants of health and cultural humility.

We seek to add a new dimension to this training through Virtual Reality (VR) devices, which will enhance our lab and enable us to provide additional clinical experiences for students across multiple settings. Through the use of virtual reality, we will be able to graduate practice-ready nurse graduates who will require less preceptor time, an important factor in gaining clinical hours on hospital floors.

Due to nursing shortages throughout the country and limited clinical placement opportunities, it is crucial that nursing education adapts to evolving needs of our students and the profession. In order to produce nurses who are equipped to successfully and skillfully care for patients, we are turning to technology as a supplement to the immersion of clinical training. VR is a tool that will enable Adelphi’s nursing educators to lead in providing exemplary training to students during an unprecedented crisis, preparing them to enter the field more rapidly to fill critical societal needs.
